PhD Student (m/f/d) in the Field of Communication and Information Theory

Job Description

We are seeking an exceptional candidate for an academic position with above average knowledge of wireless communication, statistical signal processing and/or information theory. Your responsibilities will include conducting independent research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Energy efficient wireless multi-user communication
  • The design of (approximate) message passing algorithms
  • The analysis of fundamental limits in large-scale wireless communication systems

The research will fall in the general area of high dimensional statistics and a major focus will lie on approximate message passing (AMP), a modern tool for estimating parameters in high dimensional spaces. This area has strong connections to machine learning and statistical physics, so students from compute science, applied math or physics with relevant prior knowledge and interest are explicitly welcome to apply.

Responsibilities include independent research in one or more of the above areas. In addition, you will be responsible for publishing selected results in high-impact journals and at conferences. Furthermore, your duties may also include assisting in teaching courses at CEL. The activity is combined with the goal of obtaining a doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The typical duration of the doctorate is 3-5 years. At CEL, you can expect an interdisciplinary research environment at the interface between electrical engineering and information technology, computer science, physics, and applied mathematics, which offers you extensive scientific freedom. Furthermore, extensive opportunities for further education are available to you.

Contract Details

We offer a temporary full-time position (100%) with a salary in the remuneration group TV-L E13, depending on the fulfillment of the professional and personal requirements. The position is limited to 3 year, with the possibility of a 3 year extension.

Requirements and Qualifications

You have an outstanding Master's degree in electrical engineering and information technology, communication engineering, applied mathematics or in a related field of study, very good English skills, good verbal and written expression, as well as an independent and responsible way of working. Ideally, you have programming experience as well as advanced knowledge in one or more of the related topics channel coding, information theory, or statistical signal processing. We also welcome applicants from other disciplines who would like to apply their knowledge "cross-domain" in communications engineering systems. You have a dexterous and confident manner in dealing with project partners and students, organizational skills and the ability to work in a team.

Application Process

The applicant will become part of a newly acquired junior research group under the leadership of Dr.-Ing. Alexander Fengler.
Please apply directly by e-mail to Dr.-Ing. Alexander Fengler. Please include a complete curriculum vitae (including a list of publications, if applicable), a letter of motivation, and complete Master's and Bachelor's transcripts with your application.
Please note that due to the expected large number of applications, we will not be able to respond to all applications. We will only contact applicants who have passed an initial screening.
We prefer a balanced number of employees (f/m/d). Therefore, we ask female applicants to apply for this position.
Recognized severely disabled persons will be given preference in case of equal suitability.
