Lebenslauf
Laurent Schmalen erhielt den Dipl.-Ing.-Abschluss in Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik sowie den Dr.-Ing.-Abschluss von der RWTH Aachen, Deutschland, in den Jahren 2005 und 2011. Von 2011 bis 2016 war er als Forschungsingenieur bei Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs tätig. Von 2016 bis 2019 leitete er die Abteilung „Codierung für optische Kommunikation“ bei Nokia Bell Labs, Stuttgart, Deutschland. Von 2014 bis 2019 war er zudem Gastdozent an der Universität Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Deutschland. Seit 2019 ist er ordentlicher Professor am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Karlsruhe, Deutschland, wo er das Labor für Nachrichtentechnik mit leitet. Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen Kanalcodierung, maschinelles Lernen, Modulationsformate und optische Kommunikation.
Laurent Schmalen war Preisträger und Mitpreisträger mehrerer Auszeichnungen, darunter der E-Plus-Preis für seine Doktorarbeit, der Best Student Paper Award der IEEE Signal Processing Systems Workshop 2013 sowie die Best Paper Awards des Journal of Lightwave Technology in den Jahren 2016 und 2018. Er erhielt ein ERC Consolidator Grant. 2023 wurde Laurent Schmalen zum IEEE Fellow ernannt. Er war Mitglied des technischen Programmkomitees mehrerer wissenschaftlicher Konferenzen. Er ist TPC-Co-Vorsitzender des International Symposium on Topics in Coding (ISTC) 2025. Zudem ist er General Co-Chair der International ITG Conference on Systems, Communications, and Coding 2025. Derzeit ist er Associate Editor der IEEE Transactions on Communications.
